Residents of Vernoe gazed cattle in the Medeu natural boundary at an altitude of about 1,700 meters above sea level. The name was given to this place in memory of Medeo Pusurmanov, who lived here and was engaged in charity. And the world-famous alpine skating rink Medeo was built in 1972 and many records were set on its ice. The rink is flooded with clear water from a mountain river, and when the sun warms, ahe thinnest water layer forms on the surface, which makes gliding easy. Here competitions in speed skating and speedway are held, in the evenings and at the weekends are mass skating.
There are ice hockey players are on Medeo ice, although the most modern ice palaces were built in the city for the Asian Games-2011, which were also used during the Universiade-2017. In these winter days, young skaters from all over the world competed on Medeo, and many coaches, who once performed at the foot of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, were happy to return back to this place.
Experts argued for a long time whether it was worth building a roof over a skating rink, but the legendary Medeo was decided to leave open to all winds and sunlight. There is a dam above the rink, which protected the city from the devastating mudflow in 1973. Since all mountain rivers are born on glaciers, they overflow in the spring and can cause catastrophe.
